Referrals & Placements
As well as welcoming groups and volunteers one of our main aims is to assist adults with mild to moderate mental, physical or social difficulties regain their confidence and enhance their skills in order to get into further training, education, volunteering or employment. We can now offer a City & Guilds NVQ Level 1 qualification in Horticulture, First Aid at Work, Food Hygiene & other employ-ability skills for those who wish to boost their credentials.
We also take referrals for day care provision for people with learning disabilities. Referrers should bear in mind that all our service users will be taking part in meaningful occupation and is not a drop-in facility.
Tasks are dished out at 9.00am every morning along with refreshments, with work starting at 9.30am. There is a break half way through the morning and again in the afternoon sessions, with a pause for lunch in between. We undertake horticultural activities, as well as art, pottery, cookery, woodwork, conservation, walking, physical exercise and indoor games. Each week is finished off with Foody Friday where everyone helps to prepare a two course meal and then sits round the large table and eats together. During the rest of the week food can be purchased in the Lions Den Tea Rooms or clients can bring their own packed lunches.
Referrals for both the Mental Health and the Learning Disability clients can be submitted from professionals within secondary mental health services, e.g. GP's, psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, nurses, care coordinators, social workers, community support workers and any carer (parent, grandparent, partner etc), but must must go through the 'call out' system with Durham County Council's Children & Adult Services Commissioning Team. Info can be found on the 'Locate' website (https://www.durhamlocate.org.uk/)
Every referral will be assessed individually based on our perception of the effectiveness of possible interventions, and suitability of client to site and site to client.
